2008 (so far)

If you have not listened to the Contrast Podcast this year, you have to check out this week's episode.

Listen: "2008 (so far)" (mp3)

I chose "Cat Swallow" (pirate mp3) by Royal Bangs after not being able to decide between "Eraser" (sub pop mp3) by No Age and "The Melody" (box.net mp3) by The Mae Shi. Since my choice, I realized that there was another song that blew me away this year, and it turns out that no one else picked it for the podacst. I really thought someone else would pick something from this recording. Guess not.

The song: "Machine Gun" (ysi) or (youtube) by Portishead

I also seriously consider tracks by Motico and Jaguar Love, oh and Crystal Castles. Listen to some more killer tracks from 2008... here.

The Playlist:
(00:00) Flight of the Conchords - All the ladies of the world
Tim from The face of today

(03:05) Royal Bangs - Cat swallow
Bob from this blog you are reading right now

(07:45) These Modern Socks - Where I came from

But then a quick jaunt into mid/late 90's nostalgia crappiness (sorry)...

What Is Proton Proton Doing NOW??

I miss Proton Proton.

Downloadables from EP 01
"Chinese Dancer" (box.net mp3)
"Lock Picker" (box.net mp3)

Downloadables from EP 02
"Aloha" (box.net mp3)
"Plates" (box.net mp3)
"Major Solution" (box.net mp3)

I did a little googling to find out what the former members of Proton Proton are doing now. First up, Paul Fuster a/k/a Speedy46 has a number of free downloads of his new material up on ye olde myspace.

Listen: "GO to WHERE its Clear" (box.net mp3)

Next, Jarrod Ruby is drumming for Third Border. Stream some of the their songs at, uhhh... myspace.

Finally, Aron Sanchez, the former 'gass' player of Proton Proton, is making music with Arone Dyer as BUKE AND GāSS. Now we know the gass is a mashup of a guitar and bass, so I assume a buke is a bass and uke smacked together.

Listen: "Rum For You (Edit)" (box.net mp3)

Aron has also has been running Zero Mass which is a recording studio in Redhook, Brooklyn. His clients have included: Japanther, Dub Trio, Slow Learner, and Limbs among others. Why not listen to some Limbs: "Stages" (mp3).

I'm Not There CONTEST (Bob Dylan Vs. Sonic Youth)

It's giveaway time again.

This time it's a major label recording crammed with "indie" artists... the Robert Allen Zimmerman Bio Pic I'm Not There Soundtrack. It has received plenty of coverage elsewhere, no? In case you are unfamiliar with it, the two discs feature Eddie Vedder, Sonic Youth, Calexico, Cat Power, John Doe, Yo La Tengo, Jeff Tweedy, Mark Lanegan, and Sufjan Stevens among others doing Dylan covers and one song from Dylan & The Band.

Well, I am giving the OST away and all you have to do to get it is leave a comment explaining which you like better, the Bob Dylan & The Band song "I'm Not There" or the Sonic Youth cover. The big big winner will be chosen in two weeks (around May 30th anyway).

Listen to "I'm Not There":
The Bob Dylan & The Band Version (mp3)
The Sonic Youth Cover (mp3)

Dear Sony Corporate Overlords:
I will take these mp3s down if you so desire (and fast), but I would like to point out that these are already available elsewhere on the internets and this is done in the interest of promoting your products (The Soundtrack and The Movie).

Dear Readers:
Yes, this swag is from a megacorporation, but it of high quality (except that Hold Steady cover, what a stinker). So, I thought I would pass it on to you. If I was giving out the soundtrack to say... The Hottie And The Nottie, then I would totally understand if you went and deleted my rss feed from your reader. (For the record, I don't think a The Hottie And The Nottie OST was actually released).

If you don't win and just want to buy the CDs (or 4x12"), you can get 'em... here or here (respectively). As for the DVD, I am pretty sure you have the wherewithal to find that elsewhere.

Knockin' By Luminescent Orchestrii

Luminescent Orchestrii was recommended to me last night. I was told "imagine Beirut and o'death playing together with classical precision." After some clicking I found Luminescent Orchestrii describe themselves thusly... "Romanian gypsy melodies, punk frenzy, salty tangos, hard-rocking klezmer, haunting Balkan harmony, hip-hop beats and Appalachian fiddle, all eaten and spit out by two violins, resophonic guitar, bullhorn harmonica and bass." Sound good to me.

See No Evil (Television Cover) By We Versus The Shark

Athens, Ga.'s We Versus The Shark have a new album of crunchy posthardcore out this summer, Dirty Versions. They also have another album. It is a album of covers entitled Murmurmur. The tracks on Murmurmur are being released piecemeal on donation-based Quote - Unquote Records. It is scheduled to be finished in late 2008. One can't help but wonder based solely on the album title and location of the band... will they cover R.E.M.??

Here are two tracks:

"The Greatest Gift (Scratch Acid Cover)" (mp3)
