HEALTH Megggamix (Mixed By Acid Girls)

You may know the Acid Girls from their two Health remixes a la HEALTH//DISCO. Well now they have taken the music of GT favs, Health and crafted an almost 28 minute crazyass megamix. I tend to like my music in 1:30 to 3:00 minute punk-sized chunks, but in this case I am willing to make an exception. (You may have noticed) I have a tendency to describe things as awesome. Well, this IS awesome.

Listen: "HEALTH Megggamix (Mixed By Acid Girls)" (box.net mp3) (props to Urb)

In other Health related news, they are recording a long player presently entitled GET COLOR. Also, HEALTH//DISCO comes to wax in with a new sequence and a new remix from MATH HEAD. Maybe we will get to hear that soon (hint hint).

2008 (so far)

If you have not listened to the Contrast Podcast this year, you have to check out this week's episode.

Listen: "2008 (so far)" (mp3)

I chose "Cat Swallow" (pirate mp3) by Royal Bangs after not being able to decide between "Eraser" (sub pop mp3) by No Age and "The Melody" (box.net mp3) by The Mae Shi. Since my choice, I realized that there was another song that blew me away this year, and it turns out that no one else picked it for the podacst. I really thought someone else would pick something from this recording. Guess not.

The song: "Machine Gun" (ysi) or (youtube) by Portishead

I also seriously consider tracks by Motico and Jaguar Love, oh and Crystal Castles. Listen to some more killer tracks from 2008... here.

The Playlist:
(00:00) Flight of the Conchords - All the ladies of the world
Tim from The face of today

(03:05) Royal Bangs - Cat swallow

I'm Not There CONTEST (Bob Dylan Vs. Sonic Youth)

It's giveaway time again.

This time it's a major label recording crammed with "indie" artists... the Robert Allen Zimmerman Bio Pic I'm Not There Soundtrack. It has received plenty of coverage elsewhere, no? In case you are unfamiliar with it, the two discs feature Eddie Vedder, Sonic Youth, Calexico, Cat Power, John Doe, Yo La Tengo, Jeff Tweedy, Mark Lanegan, and Sufjan Stevens among others doing Dylan covers and one song from Dylan & The Band.

Well, I am giving the OST away and all you have to do to get it is leave a comment explaining which you like better, the Bob Dylan & The Band song "I'm Not There" or the Sonic Youth cover. The big big winner will be chosen in two weeks (around May 30th anyway).

Listen to "I'm Not There":
The Bob Dylan & The Band Version (mp3)
The Sonic Youth Cover (mp3)

Dear Sony Corporate Overlords:
I will take these mp3s down if you so desire (and fast), but I would like to point out that these are already available elsewhere on the internets and this is done in the interest of promoting your products (The Soundtrack and The Movie).

Dear Readers:
Yes, this swag is from a megacorporation, but it of high quality (except that Hold Steady cover, what a stinker). So, I thought I would pass it on to you. If I was giving out the soundtrack to say... The Hottie And The Nottie, then I would totally understand if you went and deleted my rss feed from your reader. (For the record, I don't think a The Hottie And The Nottie OST was actually released).

If you don't win and just want to buy the CDs (or 4x12"), you can get 'em... here or here (respectively). As for the DVD, I am pretty sure you have the wherewithal to find that elsewhere.

The L Magazine's 8 NYC Bands You Need To Hear (In 2008)

I finally got around to skimming the The L Magazine's 8 NYC Bands You Need To Hear issue. Here is a quick review of the bands featured (with links and when available, mp3s).

High Places have been buzzed and blogged about for awhile now (47 posts here). I am really liking them, although as I was listen to them the other day I was told by a fellow listener "I don't think I could listen to too much of this. It is too cute." AND this from someone who likes Psapp. I digress. Drrrr.
Listen to some experimental tweedub: "Golden" (box.net mp3)

Representing the grittier Todd P/SUCKAPANTS-y contingent of NYC bands is Team Robespierre.
Listen to their electropunk: "88th Precinct" (mp3)

The one band that was selected that I had not heard but am now pretty excited about is The Lisps. Dig their indie folkrock chops.
Listen: "Pepper Spray" (mp3)

I was also interested to read about Violens, who sprang from the corpse of Lansing-Dreiden. They are definitely are coming at it from the poppier-less-proggy side of things this time.
Listen to something "Sunnier": "Violent Sensation Descends" (mp3)

If you are going to use a cookie name for a band, I personally would go with Hydrox, and not Famous Amos. Anywhoo... you can stream some of their songs @ their Myspace. Listen to "Everywhere", then if you like, pick up their album @ Sound Fix.

Just the band name, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, sounded so very very twee I could taste the cute in my mouth. But hey, they pull it off.
Listen: "Doing All The Things That Wouldn't Make Your Parents Proud" (box.net mp3)

Then there is the catchy indie pop of This Is Ivy League. Not for me... maybe for you??
Listen: "London Bridges" (mp3)

And lastly, La Strada who are often compared to a certain band named after a certain Middle Eastern city and I ain't talking about Yazd. Listen to them at the Myspace.

AND HEY The L Magazine, what about these bands??

Indie rockers, Susu.
Listen: "Hands Up (The Race)" (box.net mp3)

Pyschpop'ers, Flying.
Listen: "Minors" (mp3)

Postpunkers, Motico (who need to start playing some shows damnit).
Listen: "The Wandering Jew" (mp3)
(If you're worried about the title, don't. They're like 80% Jewish).

- Where do I go from my Lips And Ribs? Why XXJFG, of course... here. Also with Deathsquad and Hour Of Worship
