Never Stops By Deerhunter

Jeez... you go away for a few days and there's a new Virtual 7" from Atlas Sound (here) and then Microcastle and Weird Era Cont. and the Logos demos are LEAKED by Branford Cox by accident. Branford's apology is here.

You may have noticed the aura of hype around Microcastle which was due for release this Fall. I am going to restrain myself. I just going to post one song from Microcastle. Maybe you heard it already? It's a goodie.

Downloadable: "Never Stops" (box.net mp3)

The album looks like this:
Deerhunter

My favorite song from Microcastle is probably "Nothing Ever Happened". If you want to know what that song sounds like, buy the album right now via iTunes or wait for the physical release or non-DRM digital release.

"Without People, You're Nothing"

Consequence of Sound reminds us that today is the late, great Joe Strummer's birthday.

In honor of this great musician, start with that video up top, and then listen to “Redemption Song” (w/ Johnny Cash), and then read about his life, and then move on to the Strummer News Message Board, and end with this birthday post.

In other news, Bloc Party is taking pre-orders for their new album. Earlier this summer, their song Mercury (this version remixed by CSS) rocked my world (track via PopStereo).

And, to top it off, here's a new song called Ion Square (track via Above the Fold).

R.I.P. Pandora?

Could the music-sampling site Pandora get shut down by new government-imposed fees? HearYa is reporting that it might. Read the sad news here.

"I'll Look At You And Say It's The Happiest I've Ever Been Mixtape!!!"

That's a pretty nifty name for a mixtape, and TSURURADIO has put together a pretty nifty mixtape. Some standouts, if you need a guide: Cloud Cult's Chemicals Collide, the Wood Brothers' Make Me Down A Pallet On Your Floor and finally, Micky 3D's tune, Les Gens Raisonnables.

Speaking of Cloud Cult, that's their unofficial video up at the top of the post. You should really listen to them, if you haven't. Here's another one of their songs, You Were Never Really Alone (track via ThePunkGuy)

Believe it or not, I discovered them on Pandora, somewhere in between The Flaming Lips and Wilco. Check out the band's website here.

Music To Write With

That's a video of Peacock's Penny Arcade, a rock band staffed by writers, playing at the PEN World Voices Festival this year.

My other blogging job is writing about writing, so I'm always looking for music to write with.

That's how I found singer Willy Vlautin (of Richmond Fontaine), who is also the author of the dark road novel, The Motel Life. You can see my interview with him at this link.

And for the folks who want music by straight-up musicians, here are two tracks that caught my attention yesterday...

Check out Deleon's new tune, Be Still Angelino. It's Mars Volta meets Spanish folk music, and kept me happy all day at work. Find them at JDub Records. (Track via IGIF)

And, most importantly, A Limerick Ox spots a new Okkervil River track, Lost Coastlines. Go to the band's website for a music video and much, much more.

Prisoners and Monkeys

That's a brand new video from the Spanish Prisoners.

According to the band's press release, there is more to follow: "we are working on a brand new EP that we're planning on releasing for free through our website early fall 2008. It'll have 3-5 songs on it, and will possibly include a special cover."

If you can still remember tapping your foot along with Gorillaz around the turn of the century, then you should mark September 23rd on your calendar. That's when a new album by Monkey comes out. Who is Monkey? Here's the website (with streaming tracks). Check out the description, it's prog rock meets 21st Century opera:

"A singular and unique fusion of traditional Mandarin opera/folklore and modern audiovisual interpretation, MONKEYŠis the result of director Chen Shi-Zheng having enlisted GORILLAZ masterminds Albarn and Hewlett to provide unique, modern musical and visual interpretations of the themes and characters of this most beloved work of Chinese folklore."

Nothing a Pair of Sissors Can't Fix

John Berryman
Have you ever read John Berryman's poetry? Half of the indie rock songwriters in the world have been reading his stuff, and you should too.

Berryman was rock & roll. He wrote ragged, emotional poetry, breaking rhyme scheme and rhythm rules in the most amazing ways.

Here's Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds wailing about writing and postmodernism and John Berryman's suicide. We Call Upon The Author (track via Snuh's LiveJournal).

Of course, The Hold Steady needed to talk about Berryman too. Here's a live version of "stuck between the stations," punctuated by the amazing line: "There was that night that we thought that John Berryman could fly. / But he didn't so he died" (track via Captain's Dead)

Finally, here's Okkervil River riffing off the Beach Boys and singing about John Berryman's last days. It's called John Allen Smith Sails, and was one of my favorite songs last year (track via Mixtape 4 Melfi).

I'm not the only person who thought about this. Brandon Stosuy wrote an essay about The Hold Steady and Berryman, called, excellently enough, How a Resurrection Really Feels.

Finally, for your weekend listening pleasure, Bob sends along a song from 3/4ths of the band, Grizzly Bear. It's Department of Eagles, composed of, according to the press release, "Daniel Rossen from Grizzly Bear with his friend Fred Nicolaus, plus assistance from Chris Taylor and Chris Bear also of Grizzly Bear."

Here's the title track, In Ear Park.

The Guest Blogger Cometh

So Bob is on vacation, and I'll be guest blogging for a week or so.

My name is Jason Boog, and I usually blog about writers over at The Publishing Spot. My music tastes are a bit different than Bob's--a little more melodic, on the one hand; and a little more prog rock, on the other. If I had a music blog, it would be called Gimme Pet Sounds.

Don't believe me? Here are the songs keeping me happy right now...

First up is Noah and the Whale's cheery tune, “5 Years Time.” It's got whistling, ukulele and a shout chorus that goes "love, love, love" (track via I Guess I'm Floating).

Lately, I've been bopping my head to "...And We Exhale and Roll our Eyes in Unison" by Los Campesinos!, part of Hold On Now, Youngster coming out in October (track via Vague Space).

I'm also wrapping my head around Inara George's new song, "Accidental" (box.net mp3). She's working with Brian Wilson's old collaborator Van Dyke Parks (who co-wrote the lost masterpiece, Smile) for this new album which you can click here to pre-order (track originally posted at Fluxblog).

To compensate all that twee, Okkervil River's new track, "Pop Lie" reminds us that all rock stars are out to fool you. "He's the liar who lied in his pop song / And you're lying when you sing along," he sings (track via Vague Space).
